Celebrity PWS mom??

Shawn and I have often said that we need a celebrity in the pws 'world.' Not that we want a celebrity to have a child with PWS but it would be nice to have someone in the public eye get the word out there to increase awareness and fundraising efforts. Today I came across this article about a woman named Katie Price from the UK. The article states that she may have signed a movie deal with Paramount Pictures to film her life story. It states that she has a son with prader-willi syndrome.

...part of the article can be found below....

Does anyone know who this is??? Do you think having a 'celebrity' connected to Prader-Willi Syndrome could help further our cause? If so, how do you think it would be helpful?

Katie Price and Harvey have some Mummy and Me time in LA as she prepares to sign up for a movie about her life

She suddenly removed her two youngest children Junior and Princess from the public eye late last year.
But those rules don't apply to Katie Price's eldest son Harvey who has tagged along with his mother on a trip to Los Angeles.
The eight-year-old, who Price said in an interview this week is exempt from being hidden from the media, accompanied the model to a Sunset Tan salon before the pair picked up food at Mel's Drive Inn.

Katie told the Evening Standard that she didn't want to include her children with Peter Andre on her latest show because they were getting to the age where they understood what fame is.

The 32-year-old said: 'They’re at an age now where Junior is like, "Mummy, I am famous. Kids at school say I am not famous but I am," and I thought, from those remarks, that it’s time to take them out.
But she does not mind Harvey, who has a condition called septo-optic dysplasia as well as autism and Prader-Willi syndrome , being photographed or filmed because apparently, 'He has no idea about any of it.'

  1. Obviously the publics perception of the celebrity would make a world of difference. I have never heard of Katie Price, but there are many videos on YouTube of which she is the focus.
Clint Hurdle, Pittsburg Pirates new Manager, is a great spokes person, but successful campaign's are very costly and require strategic planning.

Free doesn't mean limited potential, and can create celebrities.
With the help of Vivint (formerly APX Alarm) and Extreme Makeover:Home Edition last year, the PWS community was able to raise awareness through promotion in a major way. And now we have celebrities Ethan Starkweather and his family in their new home.

Even a small, but no less important "cause", can inspire people to come together and spread the word in a big way to create awareness. Take the recent "event" Prayer Chain for EllyAnnah. Over 1400 supporters in less than two days and currently there are over 2100.

  2. There is an athletic coach here in the states who has a child with PWS... he's coach of some famous team and for the life of me I can't remember his name or his team or even his sport! (can you tell I don't get into sports?) I think it's either baseball or football, a major league team, and I want to say it's in Texas. He has done some PSA's for Prader Willi Syndrome.

In a way the article above is quite sad... she takes him because "he has no idea about any of it." I can't imagine what it is like for him to have autism and PWS with all of it's behavioral issues and constantly be on the move with changing environments, etc. I wonder about the therapy he's getting.

  3. Katie Price is most famous for being a topless model. Hardly the type of spokesperson I think you'd want to attract.

  5. I just read that article. There is a picture about halfway down where she looks almost exactly like a blonde streaked Angelina Jolie. I agree with Ms. Montecalvo - she's got a bit of a potty mouth.

  6. Saying that her son can be photographed because he doesn't know any better sounds kind of dismissive to me. :/ I've never heard of Katie Price, but I agree that if she's a topless model, I'm not really interested in having her as a spokeswoman for PWS. Sorry to be a downer in this response!

  7. Ali- I too was offended by her saying that Harvey can be photographed because he doesn't know any better. That really bothered me.

Topless model eh? No wonder Shawn spent so much time trying to figure who she is :)

I guess Jenny McCarthy was a topless model too but she has done alot for autism since her son's diagnosis.

From the article that Janis posted, it does not seem that Katie is all that interested in her son's diagnosis.

  8. Please, please don't choose Katie Price, she is a really poor role model for anyone. In the UK she is associated with a very dubious lifestyle and is famous only for her silicone enhanced assets and her desire to be in the public eye at any cost.

  9. No worries Eileen....I saw this article and didn't know who she was that's all.

  10. I love Jenny McCarthy! I wouldn't care if she was a topless model but I guess her character puts her off the list.

I wish there was another celebrity. Maybe one of us can join a reality TV show...a lot of people are becoming celebrities that way. Oh, and not it!
